While it might not be as interesting as a skeleton melting out of an iceberg, a single wood block floating on top of an iceberg within the no compass region around the magnetic south pole has people scratching their heads. This lonely piece of timber was spotted on the top of a small berg at 66 degrees south, just north of Commonwealth Bay.
Wildlife watchers near Aurora Australis’ bridge first thought it was a relaxing seal but it was soon apparent it was rectangular in shape.
Netizens around the world, however, have posted a myriad of different theories as to how the wood came to rest on the ice floe. In particular, some are arguing that it is a remainder from the biblical Ark of Noah. They propose that after the Great Deluge, the ark came to rest on top of an iceberg or ice floe, and that the piece of wood is a remnant of the ancient giant boat.
Naturally, theories from serious to sarcastic have been bursting through the blogosphere.
Said one commenter, “It’s a door – and when you open it there’s a staircase, which leads to a secret passage way to the North Pole."
We think it oddly familiar to the monolith in 2001 A Space Odyssey.......
What do you think it is?
